Problem Suggested Adjustments
High flank wear - increase clearance angle
- stabilize set-up
- decrease RPM (speed)
Poor tool life - change cutting geometry
- decrease RPM (speed)
- decrease IPM (feed)
- increase coolant pressure
- check for worn drill brushing
Drill breakage - increase coolant pressure
- check for high flank wear
- decrease IPM (feed)
- check for poor chip transportation
- check spindle on machine for wear
Poor chip forming - change cutting geometry
- increase RPM (speed)
- adjust pressure in cutting fluid system
- decrease IPM (feed)
Poor chip transportation - check for leak in cutting fluid system
- change cutting geometry
- decrease IPM (feed)
- increase coolant pressure
Oversized hole - change cutting geometry
- decrease RPM (speed)
- increase IPM (feed)
- adjust pressure in cutting fluid system
Undersized hole - change cutting geometry
- increase RPM (speed)

Poor surface finish - increase RPM (speed)

- check for vibrations
- check drill bush for excessive wear
- check quality of workpiece material
